As many of you already know, Ashtanga Palo Alto is soon moving to it's own purpose built Shala! We are so pleased to share yoga with you in a dedicated space. We feel the energy is going to be even more focused in the beautiful new space. I look forward to sharing more details in the near future. As for now, the new space is in Midtown Palo Alto behind Philz Coffee at 3191 Middlefield Ave (at Loma Verde) about 2 miles from our current location. map

We are hoping to finish with build out and painting in the next couple of weeks and open classes by mid to late May. The next Moon Day is this Sunday Feb.28. Instead of Mysore class, we are planning a special workshop on "How to Open the Hamstrings" from 9am - noon. If you are interested, there are a few spots available. Send me an email or register here.

2.) Also, this weekend. I'll be teaching a special Saturday "Enhanced Mysore" class in Monterey from 9:30-11:15 at Ashtanga Monterey in Cannery Row. It sounds like the perfect day of yoga and beach if you would like to join!www.ashtangamonterey.com

3.) We have some other exciting plans brewing. One that I can already let you in on is that Heleen will be teaching the week of April 5-12 while I travel to Taiwan. We look forward to Heleen having a more regular presence in the shala as she is eager to get back into a regular teaching routine. Btw, the studio in Taipei has put together a beautiful web page to promote my workshops there. This is because the Subud of Palo Alto is helping to organize a Shoe Drive to benefit Haiti. All you have to do is drop off shoes that you are not wearing anymore and they'll be delivered to the Soles for Souls warehouse.

Thank you for considering!

We need the 'gently worn' shoes taking up space in your closet. It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unworn shoes lying in their closets. We can use each and every one of these pairs to make a tangible difference in someone's life.

Round up shoes from your closets, bind each pair together with rubber bands and drop them at one of our participating locations or send them to one of our warehouse facilities. We will sort the shoes and categorize them based on gender, size, and type. Then when one of our relief partners expresses a need for the shoes, we will be able to fill that 'order' with your footwear! http://www.soles4souls.org/donate/your_shoes.html.

a lovely corpse

Take a poll of yoga teachers and most will tell you that the corpse pose is the most important of all postures. This final resting position allows the body to integrate the various asana and pranayama forms that have been practiced. Additionally, we have a chance to stop and do nothing, the body has a chance to "re-boot" and prepare for the next activity.

Often, we tease students who quickly jump up from their corpse as doing the "New York City Savasana." Rushing off to the next activity without resting leaves the body jittery and sore, and the mind is more likely to give into agitation.

lthough the corpse seems simple, it takes practice to really reach a state of complete relaxation.

I could go on and on about why yogis should learn to master the corpse, but I'll assume you believe me and tell you how to do it the Mysore way:

1. After completing Utpluthi and your vinyasa, jump through to the seated position. Massage the sweat back into your body, especially around the joints and any areas that feel tight or sore.

2. Cover your body with your sarong (called lungi in South India) or large towel and lie down. Even if the room is warm, you do not want the body to cool down or catch a chill after your practice.

3. Cover your eyes with a small towel (I typically use my shirt to cover the eyes). In the picture below, you can see how the eyes and head can be wrapped with a large ace bandage. This is really helpful in allowing the senses to soften and quite practically it keeps the light out so you may rest more deeply.

4. Take care to align the body in a way that is natural and comfortable:
Open the feet about shoulder width apart, allowing the legs to naturally rotate out-soften the hips and buttocks. Allow the pelvis to become neutral in neither a tilt nor a tuck so the lower back is relaxed.

Turn the palms up resting just outside of the thighs. Press down through the back of the head so you can "walk" the shoulder blades under. Have the shoulder blades flat under you will keep the chest open for easy, deep breathing.

Rock the head from side to side until it reaches neutral and the neck is relaxed. Soften the face and scalp, release the jaw.

5. Continue with about 5 Ujjayi breaths until the body softens. Then allow the breath to become so soft that you can hardly feel it on the nostrils.

6. Become still. The first of the yogic abilities (Siddhis) to develop is stillness. Do not fidget. You could move, but for now you choose not to move.

7. As the body and breath reach a point of stillness, the mind is certain to follow.

8. Rest here for a minimum of 5 minutes, longer is better 15-25 minutes if you have the luxury of time.

9. This is not a sleeping pose. You may drift into a Theta brainwave state which may resemble lucid dreaming or the space just before sleep, but no snoring please!

10. Exit your corpse with care. Gradually deepen the breath and move a stretch slowly. Bend the knees and roll to the side, take a moment on your side before pressing up with the arms as to not strain the back.

The corpse can be practiced anytime. I'll do it several times in a day, just for a few minutes, so I may feel refreshed and energized - Truly better than a cup of coffee!

Studio Open Jan.4

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year to you all and thank you for the many well wishes that we have received! I have an incredible opportunity to bring yoga toyoung women in Kenya. I am volunteering my time to go to DarajaAcademy, an all-girls high school serving remote tribes North ofNairobi (http://daraja-academy.org/). I will be doing a 2 week yogaintensive in October. These girls come from a variety of tribes, including some that practice female circumcision. They have never beenexposed to anything like yoga. My goal is to introduce them to theirbodies and minds in a new way and help them to be healthy, powerfulpeople in their communities. Manduka has donated mats for the girlsand Zobha has donated clothes. I am selling gently-used, recycled matsdonated by Jade. I am raising money to buy anatomy coloring books andpencils for the girls. I will have to teach them some basic anatomyand physiology before I begin teaching yoga. I am asking $20 for themats and I have 20 of them. Please let me know if you'd like to buyone or want to know more about my trip. If you don't need a mat, butwould like to donate, please go the the Daraja Academy webpage.

Peace be with you.

Namaste,
Anne Maggioncalda
650 575 4843

Fall Schedule is up

Dear fellow practitioners,

We've finally updated our schedule for the fall and will go into effect on October 1. I hope that you will be happy to note several changes and (hopefully) improvements. Official start times for weekday mornings will be moved back by 15 minutes with opening mantra at 6:45am. Of course, I'm always in the shala by 5am, so you are welcome to start early.

1.) First off, we are expanding the Evening Mysore to 4 nights Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please note that the Monday class will be a bit earlier 5:00-6:30pm while Tues, Thurs, & Fri are from 5:30-7pm.

2.) The Sunday Mysore will begin at 7:45 sharp. This workshop style class will give us a chance to explore some of the essential techniques of the practice as a group and a chance to experience this through the assisted self practice format. We will open together with mantra and experiential techniques then move into self practice. At around 9am, we will move toward back bending, finishing, and closing mantra as a group.
I feel this "structured Mysore" will give us a chance to refine and explore the practice in greater detail.

3.) Wednesday morning Mysore will now be an "integration day." The instructor will practice with the class and will be available for moral support, but will not be adjusting. This will give us a chance to bond as a group of yogi's (and me a chance to sleep in a little on Wednesdays.)

4.) Friday morning will now be a Guided Vinyasa class. This class provides instruction in the core techniques of Ashtanga & Vinyasa Yoga including breath, bandha, and concentration with precise vinyasa of each posture counted through in Sanskrit.

These updates to the schedule reflect the growth and maturity of the yoga school. We are in the planning stages of several workshops and trainings in the near future. I appreciate your thoughts and feedback. You may reach me directly through the shala email ashtangapaloalto@gmail.com or by phone 650-215-3777.

Thank you for your continued enthusiasm for the practice of yoga,
Adarsh
link to schedule

*

Back Home

Dear Friends,

After a lovely summer of Yoga in the Florida Keys, we are so pleased to announce our return to the Bay Area on Wednesday, Sept.16. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in the Florida Keys from March 15- June 15. During this time, we are very pleased to have our dear friend and yoga student Doron Hanoch cover classes here at Ashtanga Yoga Palo Alto.

Besides being a great guy, Doron has a long history of yoga and contemplative studies. His teaching style and philosophy is very aligned with my own. Doron will be completing a year long residency at Esalen in Big Sur and will begin Mysore classes on March 22.

You may learn more about Doron through his photography and yoga websites:
http://www.doronhanoch.com/
http://www.yoga.doronhanoch.com/

If you are planning on making the trip to Florida, the schedule will be:

Sunday-Thursday: 7am -9am Mysore
Friday: 7am-8.45am Primary Series Led Class
Beginners class every Sunday: 9am -10am

Saturdays, New and Full Moon Days are rest day.

Cost
$20 drop in
$75 weekly
$200 monthly

The address is 82230 Overseas Highway, Mile Marker 83.2, Islamorada, Florida.

The Islamorada Chamber of Commerce website has a full list of places to stay and activities in the Keys http://www.islamoradachamber.com/

Moon Day Tuesday Feb. 24

Dear Yogi's,

A reminder that we will cancel both morning and evening Mysore classes this Tuesday Feb. 24 in observance of the New Moon Day.

For those yogi's new to the Traditional practice, I thought I would take a moment to briefly explain the deal with taking off on New and Full Moon Days.

The first reason is because this is how we have been guided to pass on the yoga by our Guruji, Sri K.Pattabhi Jois. Guruji is actually from a family of Astrologers (his father's profession) and we can observe many nuances in Ashtanga that relate to planetary cycles.

In fact, each day of the week has a different energy based on the ruling planet. For example, Saturday is taken as a rest day from yoga because it is ruled by Saturn, considered a malefic planet. Saturn's energy is one of contraction and limitation (not good for yoga). Saturday is a good time to take care of yourself. Many Ashtanga Yogi's will take an oil massage and enjoy a "zero day."

One of our favorite Ashtanga Teachers, Sri Tim Miller has written a short article detailing the moon's influence on the body and why yogi's rest on these days. Read here:
http://www.ashtangayogacenter.com/moon.html

Last, I would like to explain when the moon day is typically observed. The twenty four hour period preceding the exact time of the moon's peak is the day not to practice. For example, the Feb. 24 moon will be at it's darkest point at 5:35 pm according to Jim Maynard's professional astrology handbook, therefore we will observe the rest day on that Tuesday.

This time may change depending where you are on the globe. Also, your Ashtanga teacher may "move" the moon day to better suit the yoga schedule. For example, in Mysore, Guruji would often "move" the moon day to a Friday so that he may visit his family in Bangalore for a two day weekend.

In closing, enjoy your day of rest. Observe your energy level on the New Moon, how do you feel? And I'll see you dark and early on Wednesday.

All the best,
Adarsh

Class Updates

Namaste Everyone,

I hope you are enjoying "Winter Week." I have a few class updates for the upcoming week.

1. Friday morning (tomorrow) Mysore class: I have a guest yogi visiting. Doron Hanoch will join me in assisting the Mysore class. This will be a nice opportunity to have two instructors roaming the room giving hands-on adjustments. Additionally, it will be a nice chance to meet this lovely fellow as he will be covering classes for us in the future.

2. Sunday morning class will be a Self-Practice. The family and I are taking a trip to Tahoe for Evan's first snow this weekend. Marcus is kindly opening the shala at 7am on Sunday for Group Self-Practice. It might be nice to practice without the eyes of the teacher watching over!

3. Monday class is normal with me back in action.

4. Tuesday is the moon day. K Pattabhi Jois) talking about yoga.

Thanks for reading, see you on the mat.

Adarsh

***

Donation Update

Dear Yogi's

As many of you know, for Evan's first birthday instead of gifts we've been raising money for Amma's children's charity's. Nearly a thousand dollars have been raised so far! and contributions continue to flow in. At this time, I thought I would copy the letter that we had at the birthday party with links to Amma's websites. Thanks to all of you! BTW, we've posted some pictures on our baby blog www.ahyoga.blogspot.com

If you would still like to make a donation you may do so through us or you can also go directly to:
https://www.amma.org/donations/make-a-donation.html

About the Charities

I made my first trip to India in 2002 to follow Amma on her annual tour of the Sub Continent. As a young spiritual seeker, I planned on having deep meditation practices and transcendent visits to temples and other holy sites. Little did I realize the true mission of a spiritual master.

Although I did have time sitting in my meditative posture, the real practice was spent in selfless service. Amma frequently says that "to love God is to love others and to serve God is to serve others."

I feel very fortunate to have seen her tireless example of love and service.

While travelling the Indian countryside by bus, we would stop for food and lodging at Amma's many charitable centres. Many meals were eaten at schools and orphanages along the way. We slept on the floors of classrooms. I had the great privilege of sharing the quarters with bramachari's (spiritual renunciates). We also visited some of India's most high tech colleges and hospitals, which have been established through Amma's mission.

So much of the 4 months with Amma has made a lasting impression on me. The main realization was that no matter how lofty my goals with yoga, the real work is found through love and devotion and service to others.
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti

On the occasion of Evan's birthday, we have chosen the Amrita Niketanam and Balamandiram (Orphanage and Youth Hostel) in South India.

The Amrita Niketanam (Orphanage) and the Amrita Balamandiram (Hostel for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribal Children) in Parippally, in the Kollam district of Kerala, serve more than 500 children from the most disadvantaged sections of society. They are provided with free food, accommodations, schooling, and vocational and cultural training.

The Parippally Orphanage is a particularly poignant example of Amma's compassion for the needy and suffering. In 1989, when Amma directed the M.A.Math to take over this orphanage, it was operating under extreme dilapidated conditions. There were inadequate facilities for sanitation, a definite lack of sufficient food and nutrition for the children, not enough clothing, and dark, dirty and cramped housing. These children were neglected physically and emotionally. Volunteer renunciates from the math helped renovate the orphanage. Old buildings were replaced or upgraded. Old latrines were torn down to create an open space, the ground was levelled to install a huge underground septic tank and new drains. Special wide metal-framed bunk beds were hand made at the Amrita Math workshop for two new dormitories for the older girls. Sources of hygienic drinking water were provided and smokeless ovens installed in the kitchen.

Today the orphanage is home to 570 boys and girls of which about 500 are from tribal and scheduled caste families. Many of the tribal children have families, however, the parents are too poor to take care of the children. They come to the orphanage to receive hope, wholesome meals, loving care and the education that is not available in their home regions. The orphanage children receive academic training as well as lessons in basic health, yoga, art and culture. They are provided three nutritious meals a day and adequate clothing and medical attention. All of these improvements have greatly contributed to the basic material needs of these children; however, what is most remarkable is the non-material help related to their educational, cultural and spiritual needs. Above all, the children have found in Amma a loving mother who gives them love and compassion. Through their loving relationship with her and the many Ashram residents who are dedicating most of their working hours to their education and general well-being, a sense of security and belonging has been instilled in the children's hearts.Paripally Educational Center
The orphanage children have won several prizes for their commendable performances in academics as well as in state and district level sports competitions. Both boys and girls are taught the ancient temple art of Kerala Panchavadyam. Those who have received training from the Amrita Arts and Cultural Center at Parippally have already presented several performances in various parts of the state.

The healthy, happy environment that now exists at the orphanage has helped them to better concentrate on their studies, and they now get good grades both in class work and on examinations.

Amrita Bhavanam Hostel
The tribal people are among the poorest and most exploited sector of society. To provide hope and the opportunity for a better life for the younger generation, Amrita Bhavanam, a hostel for tribal children, was founded in 1993. Children from various tribal groups in Kerala and Tamil Nadu are accommodated in the hostel. They are provided with housing, food and exceptional educational facilities, including training in computers.

Please visit http://www.amma.org/ to learn more about Amma's charitable and spiritual activities in India and around the world

http://www.amritapuri.org/
http://www.amma.org/

***

Counted Vinyasa & Moon Day Class

***

Happy Inauguration Day Everyone,

Class Amendments for this week:
Friday Jan.23 Counted Vinyasa Led Class 6:30-8am
Sunday Jan. 25 Ashtanga Technique Led Class 8am-9:30am

*please note that Led Classes will start promptly at there assigned time*
On Friday January 23, I will guide an Ashtanga Led Class from 6:30-8am. In this session, I will present the precise vinyasa of the Primary Series as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
Below is an excerpt taken from Guruji's website http://www.kpjayi.org/method.html

Vinyasa means breathing and movement system. For each movement, there is one breath. For example, in Surya Namskar there are nine vinyasas. The first vinyasa is inhaling while raising your arms over your head, and putting your hands together; the second is exhaling while bending forward, placing your hands next to your feet, etc. In this way all asanas are assigned a certain number of vinyasas.

The purpose of vinyasa is for internal cleansing. Breathing and moving together while performing asanas makes the blood hot, or as Pattabhi Jois says, boils the blood. Thick blood is dirty and causes disease in the body. The heat created from yoga cleans the blood and makes it thin, so that it may circulate freely. The combination of the asanas with movement and breath make the blood circulate freely around all the joints, taking away body pains. When there is a lack of circulation, pain occurs. The heated blood also moves through all the internal organs removing impurities and disease, which are brought out of the body by the sweat that occurs during practice.

This Sunday January 25th is a New Moon and Solar Eclipse. Instead of cancelling this class, I would like to host a special session presenting "Supplementary Materials." Pattabhi Jois is often quoted as saying Ashtanga is 99% practice and 1% theory. Those of us persevering with our journey of yoga know this to be true.

This Sunday, I would like for us to explore a bit more of that 1%. This will include chanting, pranayama, bandha, vinyasa and the role of meditation in Ashtanga. Of course, we being Ashtanga Yogis, there will be a light practice as to integrate this theory.

Thank you for taking note of these class changes, I hope to see you there.
Adarsh

***

MLK Day Class

***

In observance of the Holiday, we will start Mysore class a little later 7:30 am and finish a little later at 9:30 am. Here's what we have in mind:

1. A return to teaching for Heleen. Starting January 13, Heleen will take over the Tuesday morning Mysore class.

2. Evening Mysore Program. Finally, we have got it on the schedule! Tuesday and Thursday evening, starting Tuesday January 13 from 5:30-7pm.

3. Off the Mat gathering. We thought we would celebrate Evan's 1st birthday and the start of the new year with cake and tea on Saturday January 17. An evite will be send out shortly but in case you don't receive it here are the details:

January 17, 3-6pm at Karen's house (please email us for details)
Because not every child is as fortunate to lead the lives we lead, instead of birthday gifts for Evan we'd like to collect donations for Ammas Orphanage and Youth Hostel.
