I have an incredible opportunity to bring yoga toyoung women in Kenya. I am volunteering my time to go to DarajaAcademy, an all-girls high school serving remote tribes North ofNairobi (http://daraja-academy.org/). I will be doing a 2 week yogaintensive in October. These girls come from a variety of tribes, including some that practice female circumcision. They have never beenexposed to anything like yoga. My goal is to introduce them to theirbodies and minds in a new way and help them to be healthy, powerfulpeople in their communities. Manduka has donated mats for the girlsand Zobha has donated clothes. I am selling gently-used, recycled matsdonated by Jade. I am raising money to buy anatomy coloring books andpencils for the girls. I will have to teach them some basic anatomyand physiology before I begin teaching yoga. I am asking $20 for themats and I have 20 of them. Please let me know if you'd like to buyone or want to know more about my trip. If you don't need a mat, butwould like to donate, please go the the Daraja Academy webpage.

Peace be with you.

Namaste,
Anne Maggioncalda
650 575 4843

Fall Schedule is up

Dear fellow practitioners,

We've finally updated our schedule for the fall and will go into effect on October 1. I hope that you will be happy to note several changes and (hopefully) improvements. Official start times for weekday mornings will be moved back by 15 minutes with opening mantra at 6:45am. Of course, I'm always in the shala by 5am, so you are welcome to start early.

1.) First off, we are expanding the Evening Mysore to 4 nights Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please note that the Monday class will be a bit earlier 5:00-6:30pm while Tues, Thurs, & Fri are from 5:30-7pm.

2.) The Sunday Mysore will begin at 7:45 sharp. This workshop style class will give us a chance to explore some of the essential techniques of the practice as a group and a chance to experience this through the assisted self practice format. We will open together with mantra and experiential techniques then move into self practice. At around 9am, we will move toward back bending, finishing, and closing mantra as a group.
I feel this "structured Mysore" will give us a chance to refine and explore the practice in greater detail.

3.) Wednesday morning Mysore will now be an "integration day." The instructor will practice with the class and will be available for moral support, but will not be adjusting. This will give us a chance to bond as a group of yogi's (and me a chance to sleep in a little on Wednesdays.)

4.) Friday morning will now be a Guided Vinyasa class. This class provides instruction in the core techniques of Ashtanga & Vinyasa Yoga including breath, bandha, and concentration with precise vinyasa of each posture counted through in Sanskrit.

These updates to the schedule reflect the growth and maturity of the yoga school. We are in the planning stages of several workshops and trainings in the near future. I appreciate your thoughts and feedback. You may reach me directly through the shala email ashtangapaloalto@gmail.com or by phone 650-215-3777.

Thank you for your continued enthusiasm for the practice of yoga,
Adarsh
link to schedule

*

Back Home

Dear Friends,

After a lovely summer of Yoga in the Florida Keys, we are so pleased to announce our return to the Bay Area on Wednesday, Sept.16. We will meet at my place and share teachings and lessons from the “way”. Last share was about Karma (article soon). Next share will be about jealousy. Feel free to share stories or teachings you know of. 5:45-7:pm. Free, bring your favorite snack.

• My time with you has extended! I will be teaching at AYPA through September 15th, Yey!

• Summer is usually a time where practice tends to slip some. The sun, traveling, life… I find it very helpful to decide ahead, how many times a week I will practice, or committing to certain days, just to keep it alive. Yoga, an inward practice, tends to be a great balance to the outwards activities of summer.

• Read the article about Guruji on my blog: http://theartofblissfulliving.blogspot.com/
And stay tuned for new articles about Kale, Karma and the Eco Rebel! The next moon day is on Tuesday March 10. However, since we are away for the Spring, class will continue as normal. Instead of cancelling class, we will cancel the moon day.

As many of you know, we are teaching at the Shri K. During this time, we are very pleased to have our dear friend and yoga student Doron Hanoch cover classes here at Ashtanga Yoga Palo Alto.

Besides being a great guy, Doron has a long history of yoga and contemplative studies. His teaching style and philosophy is very aligned with my own. Doron will be completing a year long residency at Esalen in Big Sur and will begin Mysore classes on March 22.

You may learn more about Doron through his photography and yoga websites:
http://www.doronhanoch.com/
http://www.yoga.doronhanoch.com/

If you are planning on making the trip to Florida, the schedule will be:

Sunday-Thursday: 7am -9am Mysore
Friday: 7am-8.45am Primary Series Led Class
Beginners class every Sunday: 9am -10am

Saturdays, New and Full Moon Days are rest day.

Cost
$20 drop in
$75 weekly
$200 monthly

The address is 82230 Overseas Highway, Mile Marker 83.2, Islamorada, Florida.

The Islamorada Chamber of Commerce website has a full list of places to stay and activities in the Keys http://www.islamoradachamber.com/

Moon Day Tuesday Feb. 24

Dear Yogi's,

A reminder that we will cancel both morning and evening Mysore classes this Tuesday Feb. 24 in observance of the New Moon Day.

For those yogi's new to the Traditional practice, I thought I would take a moment to briefly explain the deal with taking off on New and Full Moon Days.

The first reason is because this is how we have been guided to pass on the yoga by our Guruji, Sri K.Pattabhi Jois. Guruji is actually from a family of Astrologers (his father's profession) and we can observe many nuances in Ashtanga that relate to planetary cycles.

In fact, each day of the week has a different energy based on the ruling planet. For example, Saturday is taken as a rest day from yoga because it is ruled by Saturn, considered a malefic planet. Saturn's energy is one of contraction and limitation (not good for yoga). Saturday is a good time to take care of yourself. Many Ashtanga Yogi's will take an oil massage and enjoy a "zero day."

One of our favorite Ashtanga Teachers, Sri Tim Miller has written a short article detailing the moon's influence on the body and why yogi's rest on these days. Read here:
http://www.ashtangayogacenter.com/moon.html

Last, I would like to explain when the moon day is typically observed. The twenty four hour period preceding the exact time of the moon's peak is the day not to practice. For example, the Feb. 24 moon will be at it's darkest point at 5:35 pm according to Jim Maynard's professional astrology handbook, therefore we will observe the rest day on that Tuesday.

This time may change depending where you are on the globe. Also, your Ashtanga teacher may "move" the moon day to better suit the yoga schedule. For example, in Mysore, Guruji would often "move" the moon day to a Friday so that he may visit his family in Bangalore for a two day weekend.

In closing, enjoy your day of rest. Observe your energy level on the New Moon, how do you feel? And I'll see you dark and early on Wednesday.

All the best,
Adarsh

Class Updates

Namaste Everyone,

I hope you are enjoying "Winter Week." I have a few class updates for the upcoming week.

1. Friday morning (tomorrow) Mysore class: I have a guest yogi visiting. Doron Hanoch will join me in assisting the Mysore class. This will be a nice opportunity to have two instructors roaming the room giving hands-on adjustments. Additionally, it will be a nice chance to meet this lovely fellow as he will be covering classes for us in the future.

2. Sunday morning class will be a Self-Practice. The family and I are taking a trip to Tahoe for Evan's first snow this weekend. Marcus is kindly opening the shala at 7am on Sunday for Group Self-Practice. It might be nice to practice without the eyes of the teacher watching over!

3. Monday class is normal with me back in action.

4. Tuesday is the moon day. Classes will be cancelled.

Thank you very much,

Adarsh

R. This is a Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse. No Mysore class that day.

*I will be offering a free Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga class on Monday Feb. 16 from 6-7pm. If you want to attend to refine your skills (or just curious about the class) or if you have friends you would like to pass this on to, please let me know in advance as I'm planning on limiting the class size. This will give anyone a good overview for getting started in the Mysore class.

*We have been getting the dates together to host a workshop in Active Isolated Stretching. I've been able to expose some of you already to this excellent method and I look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks. I'll post more info soon. We are shooting for mid March and plan on a day long intensive.

*Continuing with the theme of honouring our teachers in yoga, I would like to post this short video of Guruji (Sri.
