Yoga Mats for a Cause

Dear Palo Alto Ashtanga Yoga Community,

I am a retired Stanford med school lecturer turned Ashtanga teacherand yoga therapist. I have an incredible opportunity to bring yoga toyoung women in Kenya. I am volunteering my time to go to DarajaAcademy, an all-girls high school serving remote tribes North ofNairobi (http://daraja-academy.org/). I will be doing a 2 week yogaintensive in October. These girls come from a variety of tribes, including some that practice female circumcision. They have never beenexposed to anything like yoga. My goal is to introduce them to theirbodies and minds in a new way and help them to be healthy, powerfulpeople in their communities. Manduka has donated mats for the girlsand Zobha has donated clothes. I am selling gently-used, recycled matsdonated by Jade. I am raising money to buy anatomy coloring books andpencils for the girls. I will have to teach them some basic anatomyand physiology before I begin teaching yoga. I am asking $20 for themats and I have 20 of them. Please let me know if you'd like to buyone or want to know more about my trip. If you don't need a mat, butwould like to donate, please go the the Daraja Academy webpage.

Peace be with you.

Namaste,

Fall Schedule is up

Dear fellow practitioners,

We've finally updated our schedule for the fall and will go into effect on October 1. I hope that you will be happy to note several changes and (hopefully) improvements. Official start times for weekday mornings will be moved back by 15 minutes with opening mantra at 6:45am. Of course, I'm always in the shala by 5am, so you are welcome to start early.

1.) First off, we are expanding the Evening Mysore to 4 nights Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Please note that the Monday class will be a bit earlier 5:00-6:30pm while Tues, Thurs, & Fri are from 5:30-7pm.

2.) The Sunday Mysore will begin at 7:45 sharp. This workshop style class will give us a chance to explore some of the essential techniques of the practice as a group and a chance to experience this through the assisted self practice format. We will open together with mantra and experiential techniques then move into self practice. At around 9am, we will move toward back bending, finishing, and closing mantra as a group.
I feel this "structured Mysore" will give us a chance to refine and explore the practice in greater detail.

3.) Wednesday morning Mysore will now be an "integration day." The instructor will practice with the class and will be available for moral support, but will not be adjusting. This will give us a chance to bond as a group of yogi's (and me a chance to sleep in a little on Wednesdays.)

4.) Friday morning will now be a Guided Vinyasa class. This class provides instruction in the core techniques of Ashtanga & Vinyasa Yoga including breath, bandha, and concentration with precise vinyasa of each posture counted through in Sanskrit.

These updates to the schedule reflect the growth and maturity of the yoga school. We are in the planning stages of several workshops and trainings in the near future. I appreciate your thoughts and feedback. You may reach me directly through the shala email ashtangapaloalto@gmail.com or by phone 650-215-3777.

Thank you for your continued enthusiasm for the practice of yoga,
Adarsh

I have several events planned for the Fall in Palo Alto including additional classes, workshops, and trainings. I have updated our yoga website and am so happy to be launching a new project offering an advanced therapeutic stretching technique called AIS. www.smartstretch.com

My first teaching day will be classes on Thursday morning and evening (Sept. 17). Friday is the Moon Day and we will close per the Ashtanga tradition.

I want to again thank my dear friend Doron for sharing his knowledge of yoga over these last months and his continued presence in the AYPA community. And thanks to all of you for your dedication to the practice of yoga.

Moon Day Thursday August 20th, Friday Led class with Pranayama

Greetings Ashtangis,

Its summer time with lots of out door activities and travel. It is wonderful to take advantage of this splendid season and enjoy the warmth.

I would like to encourage all of you to still keep up the Ashtanga Practice. Even if it means taking just a few classes a week.
I know for myself that once I drop off the wagon, it is very hard for me to start again. I usually have to remind myself how great I feel thanks to this practice, and that the practice will help me have a more sustainable joyful life.

So please come and join me on the mat! Its a wonderful journey i would love to share with you!

This Thursday is a moon day (new moon). There will be no Morning class, but afternoon class (5:30-7:00pm) will be held as usual.

This Friday will be a led class. We will begin with prnayama and meditation at 6:50am, and start the flow at 7:00am.
Please try to be on time, but better late than not to show up.
Its a great opportunity to experience the whole practice. Just do what you can and enjoy!

Namaste,
Doron
